Pure-blood is the term for wizarding families and individuals who claim to have no Muggles, Squibs, Muggle-borns, or half-bloods in their family tree.
Description[]
The truth is that when traced back far enough, nearly every family tree had a few non-magical ancestors. Most witches and wizards consider an individual to be a pure-blood if their parents and grandparents were not Muggles, Squibs, Muggle-borns, or half-bloods.
By 1995, the number of pure-blood families was declining. By then, most pure-blood families were related in an effort, by some, to retain their status by marrying only other pure-bloods. This eventually led to inbreeding. While some families, such as the Malfoys, had allowed for marrying half-bloods. Many others such as the Gaunts, Blacks, and Lestranges, required their family to only marry other pure-bloods.
Some pure-bloods regard themselves as superior to those witches and wizards who were born to Muggles and half-bloods. They also believe that Muggles were little more than animals. They derisively call Muggle-borns "Mudbloods." The pejorative term suggests that Muggle-borns have "dirty" blood and thus were inferior to pure-bloods, should be second-class citizens in the wizarding world, and were a disgrace to the wizarding world. Some pure-bloods believe that Muggle-borns should not be allowed to practice magic.
