- ""The rest of you 'curse-breakers'? Collateral damage, I'm afraid. Entirely expendable to me.""
- —Patricia Rakepick
Patricia Rakepick was a Dark witch and a world-famous Curse-Breaker for Gringotts Wizarding Bank that returned to Hogwarts during the Year Four of the Main Character.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Patricia Rakepick attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1967 to 1974, where she was sorted into Gryffindor. Being a gifted student, she quickly proved to be the most outstanding student of her year and was always top of her class. While Professor Albus Dumbledore found her to be an exceptional pupil, she was nevertheless greatly disliked by most of her professors for her rebellious streak, a sentiment that did not improve when, rather than being a good role model to her younger peers, she began mentoring them in the art of trouble-making. According to Rubeus Hagrid, during her student years, she was rumored to be friendly with the Marauders Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black, and James Potter, whom Patricia, to some extent, mentored in mischief-making. While a student, Rakepick was a firm believer that the Cursed Vaults existed, but her warnings went unheeded by the faculty.
After leaving Hogwarts, Patricia went on to work for Gringotts as a Curse-Breaker. She embarked on a number of daring expeditions to sites of historical sorcery. She was in charge of breaking protective curses on old forgotten wizarding treasure and retrieving it. She had a Niffler called Sickleworth assigned to her to aid in burrowing for gold at cursed sites. Patricia was eventually promoted to the post of Head Curse-Breaker, a role she held through the late-1980's. She had come to enjoy a rather illustrious reputation as one of the foremost experts in curse-breaking and as someone not to be crossed.
Return to Hogwarts (1987-1989)[]
Year Four[]
As the Cursed Vaults began posing an increasing threat, Professor Dumbledore invited Rakepick to solve the mysteries and break the curses. She arrives at the start of the Main Character's fourth year. Her entrance in the Great Hall scared Ben Copper.
Year Five[]
In the Main Character's fifth year, Rakepick chose them, along with Merula Snyde and Bill Weasley, as her assistants.
When the Main Character took a stand and challenged Rakepick in the Buried Vault, Rakepick broke their wand and tortured Merula with Crucio. However, she almost immediately took the Main Character to Ollivanders to get a new, more powerful wand afterwards.
Year Six[]
When Rakepick found the Main Character, Merula, and Ben surrounded by Dementors in the Forbidden Forest, she sent them away with a Patronus, only to turn around and attack the group herself. Rakepick killed Rowan Khanna, who had thrown herself in front of Ben, who Rakepick was aiming for.
After finding the final Cursed Vault, the Main Character got to decide Rakepick's fate. They could choose to leave her trapped in the Sunken Vault. This would doom Rakepick to suffer her worst memories over and over in a horrifying loop until she likely dies of dehydration or starvation. The Main Character’s other option was to send her to Azkaban to suffer from the Dementors.
Physical Appearance[]
Patricia was a haughty-looking witch with wavy, red hair and blue eyes. Dressed for practicality yet with an obvious wizarding flair, she often wore a long-sleeved brown shirt and matching trousers decorated with a dragon scale texture, and a blood red waistcoat that was a shorter at the back than in the front. She wore black robes, on which an ornamental Eye of Horus was pinned, high boots, white gloves, and two light brown belts across her waist, one of which held a leather holster for her wand.
Personality[]
Rakepick was a highly intelligent and magically gifted witch. She was the top of her class at Hogwarts and had many achievements as a Curse-Breaker. As a former student at Hogwarts, Rakepick was remembered by Dumbledore and Hagrid as an exceptional student who always got in trouble but remained at the top of her class. Professor Severus Snape claimed Rakepick had a bad reputation as a student. According to Professor Silvanus Kettleburn, Rakepick was a strict disciplinarian who did not tolerate foolishness from anyone. Her stringency in this regard was assumed to be the reason why Sickleworth was, according to Professor Kettleburn, the most well-behaved Niffler he had ever seen.
Rakepick had an immense confidence in her own abilities. She was very smug, and even cunning, for a Gryffindor. She tricked the Main Character into breaking into Filch’s Office on a wild goose chase, only to swoop in and retrieve something for herself. She encouraged students to deal with their rivals through ruthless manners and to not be held back by rules and regulations. Rakepick would shamelessly flaunt her position of trust and prestige in order to place herself above others. She was happy to be in the middle of the action and did not shy away from dangerous situations. Rakepick was a self-declared daredevil with little regard for rules or restrictions and with a strong sense of entitlement. She would often eye those with whom she conversed with a look of gleeful smugness yet could demonstrate a sudden temper or disdain towards those of whom she did not think very highly.
At first, Rakepick acted nice, polite, understanding, and approachable. Despite this, many characters warned the Main Character not to cross her. Rakepick had a reputation for ruthlessness and eliminating those that she believed to be her competition. Even after Rakepick ended up being a mentor the Main Character, several people are still slow to trust her. Beneath her veneer of cordiality, lurked a personality that was ambitious, cruel, sadistic, and downright evil. Hungry for the power of the Cursed Vaults, Patricia had no qualms with how she attempted to achieve this goal nor with whom she associated in the process. She manipulated young and eager students for her own goals. She did not actually care about her students beyond their immediate or potential usefulness to her, and she willingly discarded them the moment she deemed them liabilities.
Abilities and Skills[]
- Defense Against the Dark Arts: Patricia was known to have had a pronounced aptitude for the Defence Against the Dark Arts during her formative years, and her skill and proficiency only grew in the following years, during which she encountered, and expertly dealt with, a great many dangerous creatures, magical artefacts, and curses throughout her career as a Curse-Breaker. She was knowledgable and skilled enough to be appointed Professor of the subject at Hogwarts.
- Transfiguration: Rakepick encouraged students at Hogwarts to use transfiguration in duels, suggesting she had the ability to effectively incorporate transfiguration spells in her martial magic. Given how Conjuration is one of the most difficult and advanced branches of transfiguration, her proficiency in Conjuring Spells clearly demonstrated her very impressive talents in this field.
- Charms: Rakepick had remarkable talent in charms-work. She encouraged the students of Hogwarts to use charms in duels, showing that she was proficient in incorporating charms into her martial magic.
- Herbology: As a pupil, Patricia excelled in the subject, being top of her class. Her knowledge is seen when she was able to identify gillyweed with a mere glance.
- Care of Magical Creatures: Rakepick was very knowledgeable on the topic and had a gift for looking after, interacting with, and gaining the trust of a wide variety of magical creatures. Professor Kettleburn recalls her as being his most gifted student during her time at Hogwarts.
- Flying: Rakepick was a very proficient flyer, particularly in her youth. She was able to sneak into the Forbidden Forest on her broomstick. Notoriously massive and treacherous, it required a high level of control to not only be able to fly into and through the Forbidden Forest, but also to land safely.
- Occlumency: Patricia was a highly skilled Occlumens, enough so to repel the masterful Legilimency abilities possessed by Severus Snape and even he had to begrudgingly acknowledge her skills in the art. She easily blocked the Main Character from reading anything in her mind.
- Apparition: Patricia was able to Apparate at will.
- Wand Versatility: Patricia was able to successfully wield another's wand in Azkaban, casting a powerful non-corporeal Patronus with it.
- Physical Combat Skills: Rickpick was known to infuse physical combat into her dwelling style. She once allegedly killed a Manticore with her bare hands and supposedly ripped the tail off a Chimaera.
- Intellectually Gifted: Rickpick was top of her class during her school years and later became Head Curse-Breaker.
- Teaching Skills: A highly capable instructor, Patricia was a competent teacher, having quickly and effectively taught the Main Character how to cast a fully-fledged Shield Charm. Later she taught the Main Character and five of their friends how to safely execute the Blasting Curse. She also taught Bill Weasley the stunning spell. She held the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher and taught her hand-picked students useful spells that would be handy in a dangerous situation.
- Magical Mastery: Undeniably of above average in intelligence and ability, even Albus Dumbledore, arguably the greatest wizard of all time, openly respected her abilities. An exceptional pupil, she were one of the cleverest Hogwarts students of her time. In adulthood, she became a powerful Curse-Breaker for Gringotts Wizarding Bank and rose to become, not only in charge of such operations, but also widely believed to have been the greatest one alive.
- Nonverbal Magic: When she taught students how to fight spiders, she quickly and wordlessly conjured a spider for the student to practice on. This was further proof of her exemplary magical skills, given the high level of difficulty and precision required in the casting of spells non-verbally.
- Martial Magic: Rakepick was a self-professed no hold barred fighter who did not believe in putting restrictions on duelling, using curses, charms, transfiguration, potions, and even resorting to Muggle duelling if that was what it took to overcome an adversary.
- Dark Arts: As a Curse-Breaker, Rakepick had a high level of knowledge on Dark Magic and how to break its hold. She was capable of identifying various dark creatures and artifacts with ease.
