Description[]
Nifflers are rodent-like creatures with a long snout similar to that of a platypus and a coat of black, fluffy fur. Native to Britain, they live in burrows as deep as twenty feet below ground, and females produce six to eight young in a single litter. Nifflers have a pouch on their bellies which holds far more than at first seems possible, like the effects of an Undetectable Extension Charm on a container.
They are attracted to shiny things, which makes them wonderful for locating treasure, but also means they can wreak havoc if kept indoors. In general, Nifflers are usually harmless. Nifflers are gentle by nature and can even be affectionate towards their owners. However, they can destroy belongings looking for sparkly objects, and for that reason it is inadvisable to keep them as a house pet. It is also implied that they can turn vicious if provoked. Nifflers are kept by Goblins to burrow for treasure for Gringotts Wizarding Bank. The Rare, Obscure, and Confounding Case Division utilizes Nifflers that have skills far beyond that of a typical Niffler, such as sniffing all sorts of things out, surveillance and reconnaissance, and perhaps even some defense.
Nifflers are the first magical creature a player adopts. Feeding is available every three hours and Bonding rewards three Experience points every twelve hours. The amount of Experience points gained for feeding depends on how much food you give the creature. Upon reaching the maximum trust level you will gain the ability to interact with your Niffler. There are ten trust levels.
The Main Character meets their first Niffler in Year Four when Madam Rakepick lends them their own Niffler, Sickleworth, to aid in the search for the Cursed Vaults. Professor Kettleburn taught the Main Character about how to handle Nifflers during their fourth year. Sickleworth once again was provided for a lesson.
