The Murtlap is a magical marine beast resembling a rat with a growth on its back resembling a sea anemone, found on the coastal areas of Britain. They can be bought in the Magical Creatures Reserve in the Lake environment for 50 Red Notebooks. The Magizoologist level you need to unlock this creature is Level 7.

If the Main Character adopts a murtlap, they will bond and feed it. Eventually this will lead to reaching a Max Level with the creature.
During the Main Character's fourth year, the Main Character and Rubeus Hagrid brought a Clabbert to the Lake at the Magical Creatures Reserve in order to train its alertness to help protect the reserve. Before they could start training, the Main Character's Murtlap approached the Clabbert, with Hagrid claiming that it had arrived to greet the Clabbert. However, the Clabbert was alarmed and flashed its pustule red, indicating that it saw this Murtlap as a dangerous stranger. The Main Character and Hagrid were able to calm the situation down, after which this Murtlap left the scene. Hagrid explained that the Clabbert was still new to the area and thus saw all of the unfamiliar creatures there as potential threats, inspiring the Main Character to engage in another training session with Hagrid to help familiarize the Clabbert with its new neighbors.
