'R,' also known as The Cabal, was a group of dark wizards and witches. They sought the Cursed Vaults.

Description[]

'R' was a mysterious organization who had an interest in the Cursed Vaults, but their motivations were unknown. Who, or what, 'R' was and what their goals were seemed to be the main plot driver of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. All that was known about 'R' was that it was some nefarious group known as the "Cabal" that was trying to open the Cursed Vaults to acquire some unknown treasure. They claim to value enlightenment and immortality.

'R' seemed to have been manipulating events from during Jacob's school days. While the Main Character came across several enemies, human and otherwise, 'R' was actively hindering their progress from the outside, even going so far as to use surrogates to try and assassinate and kidnap the Main Character. The only clue the Main Character had as to the identity of the group was through letters they had written and signed only as "-R." They seemed very motivated into recruiting the Main Character into the group and making them their future leader. Jacob was also unwittingly a candidate to the cabal and Merula Snyde was essentially forced to join them.

For much of Year 5, 'R' tried to claim the life of one of the Main Character's innocent friends who was not as involved in the plot as the Main Character was. The Main Character managed to thwart them, but 'R' made good on their promise when Patricia Rakepick murdered Rowan Khanna.

Name Notes Current Status
Peregrine Leader Presumed Deceased
Peter Pettigrew Former member Deceased
Patricia Rakepick Corrupt former Head Curse-Breaker of Gringotts. Served as Jacob and his friend's contact between themselves and 'R', manipulating the events that led to Duncan Ashe's death, after which she was confronted by Olivia Green. She froze Olivia after she confronted her, then attempted to enter the Buried Vault with Peter Pettigrew and Jacob, only to come face-to-face with the Hungarian Horntail guardian while Jacob used his Legilimency to pass to the next chamber, then was transported to the Forbidden Forest by touching the central column of the Vault. Instigated another search for the Cursed Vaults after infiltrating Hogwarts, first as a Curse-Breaking consultant, then as the teacher for Defence Against the Dark Arts, during which she recruited and manipulated students to the effort, only to reveal her true nature in the wake of her students' defeat of the Hungarian Horntail protecting the Buried Vault, intending to spare the Main Character for their Legilimens abilities, but used Bill Weasley and Merula Snyde as sacrifices to the Horntail, the latter of which she tortured with the Cruciatus Curse. Forced to retreat, however, when faced with the risk of suffocation from Garrotting Gas delivered by the Main Character and Apparated away. Allegedly went rouge from 'R' in her quest for the Cursed Vaults and went into hiding from Jacob and Alastor Moody, yet later returned to the Forbidden Forest, saving the Main Character and their friends from a Dementor attack before engaging in a duel with them. Subsequently attempted to murder Ben Copper with the Killing Curse, unintentionally striking down Rowan Khanna instead, then escaping with a laugh. Attended a secret 'R' meeting, arriving late and unmasking the Main Character, then duelled Alastor Moody, Jacob, and several students with Verucca Buckthorn-Snyde before both fled via Apparition. Pursued Merula, the Main Character, and Ben into the Sunken Vault and engaged in a duel with them, only to be defeated and eventually incarcerated in Azkaban, from which she attempted to escape from a year later, meeting and briefly joining forces with the Main Character in an attempt to break out. Realized, however, that it was too late for her and provided her former pupil with advice against 'R', then was re-apprehended by the Dementors and returned to her cell. Incarcerated in Azkaban
Verucca Buckthorn-Snyde High-ranking member. Served as Peregrine's mouthpiece among 'R', dispatching his commands to her fellow operatives. Challenged the Main Character and their friend as they attempted to enter Knockturn Alley, then duelled them alongside several dark wizards, only to be swiftly defeated by Patricia Rakepick and blasted sprawling to the floor. Slowly manipulated her niece Merula Snyde into joining 'R', making an Unbreakable Vow with her in which she swore to train Merula in the magical arts that would allow her to defeat Patricia Rakepick. Attended a secret Knockturn Alley meeting with Kazuhiro Shiratori and the disguised Main Character, then duelled the Main Character's team with Rakepick before fleeing via Apparition. Later revealed her true identity as a member of 'R' to Merula and enlisted her into 'R', meeting and initiating her niece into 'R' within Knockturn Alley while also making sure that the Main Character was present by staging a conversation within earshot of Mundungus Fletcher. Met with Zenith Xeep in Knockturn Alley to take over ownership of a stolen wand, conversing with the opera diva over the powers of Xeep's Luscious Locks Solution, stunning Ben Copper upon his emergence before Disapparating in the wake of the Main Character's arrival. Rescued Eustace Burke following his exposure and nonverbally knocked her leader's child back, then Apparated away with the uncovered 'R' agent. Met with the Main Character in the Shrieking Shack following 'R''s capture of Corey Hayden, whereupon she introduced herself and revealed her and Merula's shared blood, then introduced Peregrine to them, joining her leader as he attempted to persuade his child of The Cabal's true intentions.
